Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate, Global Shipping Faces Severe Challenges

Geopolitical conflicts across the Middle East have sharply escalated in recent days. On February 28, 2026, amid rising frictions between the United States and Iran, Iran launched military strikes against multiple Middle Eastern nations. Consequently, the airspace of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and other regional countries has been closed, with all commercial flights suspended – leading to a complete disruption of air freight corridors. The airspace closure is expected to last four to five days, and the exact reopening date will depend on how the situation evolves. Mihan Logistics is closely monitoring all relevant airspace and flight updates and will notify customers promptly as new information becomes available.

Escalating Closure of the Strait of Hormuz Worsens Global Shipping Crisis

As security conditions in the Strait of Hormuz deteriorate rapidly, major global shipping lines are adjusting their routes and operational strategies. Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthi forces have announced a resumption of attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes, posing a renewed severe threat to the already fragile Red Sea route. As one of the world's most vital corridors for oil and cargo transportation, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz will directly prevent a large number of vessels from entering or leaving the Persian Gulf, causing severe disruptions to global supply chains.

Summary of Major Carriers' Operational Adjustments (as of March 1, 2026)

  • MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company): Globally suspends new bookings for cargo destined for the Middle East and halts all vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • MSK (Maersk): All vessels will resume routing via the Cape of Good Hope and suspend transits through the Strait of Hormuz. Services to the UAE, Oman, Qatar and other countries in the region may be affected.
  • HPL (Hapag-Lloyd): Effective March 1, 2026, all vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz are suspended due to security restrictions. Vessel calls at Arabian Gulf ports may experience delays, diversions, or schedule adjustments.
  • CMA CGM: An Emergency Conflict Surcharge (ECS) will be applied to all new bookings. All vessels operating in or heading to the Persian Gulf have been directed to immediately move to safe zones. The carrier has also suspended Suez Canal transits and will reroute all affected vessels via the Cape of Good Hope.
  • COSCO Shipping: Orders all vessels in transit to reduce speed and closely monitor the situation. The carrier is restricting acceptance of new bookings and is in discussions with authorities in Oman regarding discharge and transshipment arrangements.
  • ZHONGGU Logistics: Continues accepting cargo for the Red Sea, with additional surcharges of USD 1,500/3,000 per container. The surcharge applies to voyages "ZHONG GU 3/2611W" and "ZHONG GU HUANG HAI/2602W", valid until March 11.
  • WHL (Wan Hai Lines): Immediately suspends all cargo loading and unloading operations for Middle Eastbound shipments.
  • EMC (Evergreen Marine): Suspends new bookings for Red Sea and Middle East routes. For shipments already booked but not yet having containers picked up, please suspend all document processing and container release procedures pending further instructions from headquarters.
  • PIL, RCL, CUL, KMTC: Suspend new bookings for Red Sea and Middle East routes. Revised freight rates will be announced separately.
  • ZIM: Continues accepting Red Sea cargo with substantial freight rate increases. For example, the "CSPC MERCURY Nansha" service will apply an increase of USD 800/1,600 per container, while the "SSF DREAM" vessel will see a rate hike of USD 1,500/3,000 per container. All previously confirmed bookings will be subject to the adjusted rates.

Official Advisory from Mihan Logistics

Given the high uncertainty of the current situation in the Middle East and the severe disruptions to both air and ocean freight networks, Mihan Logistics recommends that our valued customers take the following actions:

  • Closely monitor developments: For all shipments that are booked, have had containers picked up, have been gated in at the port, or are already on board vessels, please await further official notices from carriers and from Mihan Logistics.
  • Prepare alternative logistics plans in advance: Evaluate the cost and transit time implications of alternative routes, including the Cape of Good Hope.
  • Contact us for professional support: Mihan Logistics provides comprehensive DoortoDoor (DDP) services from China to the Middle East, covering full customs clearance and duties/VAT. At present, we only accept general cargo (final pricing subject to actual shipment date).
