Cargo Insurance Services
This classification functions like layers of protective shields: basic covers provide core protection, while additional covers address specific risks. 1. Main Covers Main covers are basic coverages that can be purchased independently and form the core of most cargo insurance policies. Free from Particular Average (FPA): This is the most basic level of coverage. It primarily covers total loss of the goods caused by natural disasters (such as tsunami or storm), as well as total or partial loss caused by accidents to the conveyance (such as stranding or collision). In simple terms, if only a portion of the cargo is damaged by seawater ingress due to a natural disaster, FPA does not cover such partial loss. It is typically suitable for low-value, robust bulk commodities such as ore or logs. With Particular Average (WPA): This coverage is often misunderstood due to its name, but it is broader than FPA. It includes all coverage under FPA and adds a key element: coverage for partial loss of the goods caused by natural disasters (such as heavy rain or seawater immersion). It is suitable for medium-value goods that are sensitive to moisture, such as textiles and general household appliances. All Risks: This is the most comprehensive of the main covers. It includes all coverage under WPA and additionally covers loss or damage caused by general external perils. These "general external perils" typically include theft, pilferage, non-delivery, fresh water rain damage, shortage, clashing, and hook damage. It is important to note that All Risks does not cover everything; it generally excludes special perils such as war, strikes, and failure of delivery. It is suitable for high-value, fragile goods such as precision instruments, electronic products, and artwork. 2. Additional Covers Additional covers are supplementary to main covers and cannot be purchased alone; they must be attached to a main cover. General Additional Risks: These cover common external perils. Examples include theft, pilferage and non-delivery (TPND), fresh water and rain damage, shortage, intermixture and contamination, leakage, clashing and breakage, taint of odor, sweating and heating, hook damage, and breakage of packing. If you have purchased All Risks, these general additional risks are typically already included. Special Additional Risks: These cover risks arising from special circumstances or specific conditions, often related to political, military, or country-specific factors. Examples include war risk, strikes risk, failure of delivery risk, import duty risk, and rejection risk. These risks are generally not covered under All Risks. If your cargo is transiting through regions with political instability or if the destination country has special customs policies, you should consider adding these coverages. 3. Specialized Covers by Mode of Transport In addition to the general ocean marine covers described above, there are specialized covers for different modes of transport, with protection logic similar to marine insurance but tailored to the characteristics of each mode. Overland Transportation Insurance / Overland Transportation All Risks: Applicable to international rail or road transport. Covers loss or damage caused by accidents such as collision, overturning, derailment, or road collapse. Air Transportation Insurance / Air Transportation All Risks: Applicable to air transport. Covers loss or damage caused by accidents such as aircraft crash, disappearance, or fire. Parcel Post Insurance / Parcel Post All Risks: Applicable to international postal parcels. Covers loss or damage caused by natural disasters or accidents during transit.
This addresses the issue of where coverage begins and ends, commonly referred to in the industry as the application of the "warehouse-to-warehouse" principle. The terms you mentioned—"port-to-port," "door-to-door," and "Amazon shelf" — are specific descriptions of this dimension. Port-to-Port: Under this scope, coverage applies from the time the goods leave the warehouse at the port of loading until they are discharged from the conveyance at the port of destination. Once the goods are unloaded onto the dock, into a customs warehouse, or into the custody of port authorities at the destination port, coverage terminates. This means that if theft or water damage occurs while the goods are stored at the port, the insurance company will not cover the loss. This arrangement is common in transactions where the buyer assumes responsibility for risks within the importing country. Door-to-Door: This is the classic application of the warehouse-to-warehouse clause. Coverage extends from the door of the shipper's factory or warehouse to the door of the consignee's final warehouse. It covers not only the main ocean or air leg but also the inland trucking at both ends. For businesses engaged in DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) trade, this is the ideal coverage, providing full end-to-end protection. Amazon Shelf (FBA Delivery): This is a specialized application of door-to-door coverage in the cross-border e-commerce sector. Coverage extends from the seller's dispatch location to the Amazon Fulfillment Center (FBA warehouse), until the goods are received and checked into shelf inventory. It precisely covers the "last mile" risks, including incidents during courier delivery and warehouse unloading, addressing the key protection concerns for FBA sellers prior to inventory check-in.
Having complete and accurate documentation is essential during both the insurance placement and any subsequent claims process. When purchasing insurance, you will need to provide: Commercial Invoice: This is the core document for determining the insured value, detailing the commodity name, value, and quantity. Packing List: Supplements the invoice with packaging details, number of packages, gross weight, and net weight, enabling the insurer to assess risk. Bill of Lading / Air Waybill: Provides transport information such as vessel name and voyage number, container number, port of loading, and port of destination, clearly defining the shipping route. Insurance Application: A formal document requesting insurance coverage, specifying key elements such as coverage type, insured amount, and transport route. Letter of Credit (L/C): If your transaction is settled by letter of credit, insurance must be strictly arranged in accordance with the coverage type and amount specified in the L/C to ensure smooth settlement.
