Must-read for Exporters of Fresh Produce, Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals: From PTI Inspection to Temperature Recorder, Mihan Logistics Helps You Avoid 5 Critical Oversights

Pain Point Quote

"The fruits were fresh when loaded into the container, but completely spoiled upon arrival at the port. The shipping line and freight forwarder shifted responsibilities to each other. After checking the temperature recorder, we finally found out that pre-cooling was not conducted at all."

A reefer container is far more than an ordinary container equipped with an air conditioner. Mihan Logistics has a dedicated professional cold chain division. This article summarizes 5 common oversights that refrigerated cargo shippers often regret, to help you avoid operational risks.

I. Core Parameters of Reefer Containers (Taking 40RH as an Example)

  • Internal dimensions: Similar to those of a 40HQ container. Due to the space occupied by thermal insulation layers, the actual volume is approximately 65 m³.
  • Temperature range: -30°C ~ +30°C (Precise temperature setting is available)
  • Power supply: Onboard vessel power (for sea transit) + Diesel generator (for over-the-road trucking)

II. 5 Mandatory Confirmations Prior to Booking (Mihan Standard Checklist)

1.Preset cargo temperature

Cargoes with different temperature requirements are strictly prohibited from mixed loading, which will easily cause cargo deterioration.

2.Demand for Controlled Atmosphere (CA)

Controlled atmosphere technology can inhibit the respiration of fruits and extend their shelf life. Please inform us of such requirements in advance.

3.Pre-cooling requirements

All cargo must be pre-cooled to the preset temperature before loading. Loading goods at ambient temperature directly into the container will overload or even burn out the refrigeration unit.

4.Impact of defrost cycle on sensitive cargo

Certain pharmaceuticals and premium fruits are vulnerable to temperature fluctuations, so the defrost frequency needs to be adjusted accordingly.

5.Terminal Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI)

Mihan Logistics requires mandatory PTI (Pre-Trip Inspection) prior to booking to ensure the container body, refrigeration unit and temperature control system work properly. The inspection fee is about USD 100-150 per container, and Mihan Logistics can assist with the arrangement.

III. Key On-site Loading Guidelines (Any omitted step may lead to cargo issues)

  • Reserve a 10cm air duct: Keep gaps between cargo and container walls, ceiling and floor to guarantee smooth cold air circulation.
  • Adopt plastic dunnage boards: Solid wood dunnage boards are forbidden, as they absorb moisture, get moldy and block air ducts easily.
  • Run the unit continuously for 2 hours manually after loading: Verify that the refrigeration unit can steadily cool the container down to the preset temperature.
  • Install an RFID temperature recorder mandatorily: It automatically records temperature data throughout the whole shipment and serves as the only valid evidence for claims.

IV. Reference of Typical Charges (Mihan Logistics Quotation System)

Charge Item Reference Rate Remarks
Ocean Freight 2 to 3 times standard container rates Premium charged for cold chain equipment and priority service from shipping lines
Terminal Shore Power Fee USD 100-200 per day Charged for shore power usage during vessel berthing
Diesel Generator Fee USD 50-100 per day For power supply during over-the-road trucking
Pre-cooling Fee USD 150-300 per container Mihan Logistics can arrange cold storage if the shipper has no pre-cooling facilities

Note: All rates above are denominated in US Dollars. The final charges re subject to the shipping line's official quotation at the time of booking.

V. Real Incident Alerts from Mihan Logistics (Lessons Learned from Industry Losses)

Case 1: Pineapples without pre-cooling

The cargo was loaded directly at ambient temperature without pre-cooling. The refrigeration unit burned out after long-term high-load operation, resulting in total spoilage of the entire container of pineapples, with a cargo loss of USD 50,000.

Case 2: Wrong temperature stated in documents

The documents submitted indicated a required temperature of -18°C, while the actual temperature required for the cargo was -25°C. The shipping line set the temperature as per the wrong document, causing all goods to thaw and be scrapped.

Case 3: Power Failure Alarm Ignored

A power outage occurred during transit, and no response was made to the alarm. All seafood inside the container deteriorated. Since no temperature recorder was installed, the shipper failed to file a valid claim against the shipping line.

Commitment

For all reefer containers booked through our company, PTI inspection and RFID temperature recorder installation are compulsory. We can also purchase cold chain cargo transportation insurance on your behalf to provide full-process protection for your shipments.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Can we use a self-provided generator for the reefer container?

A1: No. Power is supplied by the vessel’s onboard power system during sea transit. A dedicated diesel generator set (Gen-set) is required for over-the-road transportation. Mihan Logistics can arrange trucks and generator sets uniformly to avoid compatibility risks.

Q2: Can fruits requiring different temperatures be consolidated in one container?

A2: Absolutely not. Mihan Logistics suggests booking separate containers. Mixed loading will lead to total loss of the entire consignment, and insurance companies will refuse compensation for such cases.

Q3: How to file a claim if the temperature recorder malfunctions?

A3: Mihan Logistics will assist clients in appointing third-party institutions (e.g. SGS) to retrieve and analyze temperature data, and submit claims to the shipping line based on the official records. Without a temperature recorder, there is no valid evidence for claim settlement.
